North Highlands
Highlands Loch Ness More Than A Monster

North Highlands Area

Caithness and the Castle of Mey: visit some very special places in the "lowlands beyond the Highlands".

From Inverness, follow the A9 north to Latheron and join the A99 towards Wick. Look out for the "Hill o` Many Stanes" just south of Ulbster, where mysterious rows of stones set out in prehistoric times fan out over the hillside. Continue northwards on the A99, looking out for signposting to the Grey Cairns of Camster - impressive huge chambered cairns dating back around 5,000 years and set amidst moorland and forestry. Visitors can explore inside the cairns if they`re prepared to crouch down in the low passageways! Past Wick, continue north on the A99 to John O`Groats and Duncansby Head, where large colonies of seabirds can be seen on the stunning sea cliffs and stacks. Then on to the Castle and Gardens of Mey, the holiday home of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, now gifted to the people of Caithness and open to the public.
